Villa Tuttorotto, Rovinj, Istria, Croatia

Villa Tuttorotto is an outstandingly beautiful little boutique hotel, housed in a tastefully renovated 16th-century villa, in the historic heart of Rovinj. Luxurious and bijou, it has a degree of charm and character that most hotels can only dream of, and more heritage features than you can shake a stick at.

Small and intimate with just seven rooms, Villa Tuttorotto is wonderfully luxurious and romantic but in many ways it’s the decoration and relaxed, unstuffy atmosphere which really sets it apart. Bedrooms and communal areas are filled with antique furniture, the walls are hung with artwork in gold-painted frames, and the marble or polished wooden floors are strewn with tribal, Turkish or Persianate rugs. At times it feels as much like a private museum collection as a hotel, but it never feels cluttered.

The reception has a glass floor exposing two stone chambers below, filled with Roman amphorae (most of them discovered here when the building was renovated), while the lounge area has glass-fronted wooden display cases filled with books on art and architecture, and the fireplace has been converted into an ethnographic display. Even the lift is made into a period feature – old and quite slow, but with an antique armchair inside for comfort.
