Villa Tuttorotto, Rovinj, Istria, Croatia

Villa Tuttorotto is an outstandingly beautiful little boutique hotel, housed in a tastefully renovated 16th-century villa, in the historic heart of Rovinj. Luxurious and bijou, it has a degree of charm and character that most hotels can only dream of, and more heritage features than you can shake a stick at.

Small and intimate with just seven rooms, Villa Tuttorotto is wonderfully luxurious and romantic but in many ways it’s the decoration and relaxed, unstuffy atmosphere which really sets it apart. Bedrooms and communal areas are filled with antique furniture, the walls are hung with artwork in gold-painted frames, and the marble or polished wooden floors are strewn with tribal, Turkish or Persianate rugs. At times it feels as much like a private museum collection as a hotel, but it never feels cluttered.

The reception has a glass floor exposing two stone chambers below, filled with Roman amphorae (most of them discovered here when the building was renovated), while the lounge area has glass-fronted wooden display cases filled with books on art and architecture, and the fireplace has been converted into an ethnographic display. Even the lift is made into a period feature – old and quite slow, but with an antique armchair inside for comfort.

Opened in 2011, the Lone in Rovinj is Croatia’s first and only member of Design Hotels. Combining elegant minimalist architecture with contemporary furnishings and a stunning coastal location, it has 248 rooms and suites. There’s an outdoor pool set amid lush landscaping, a vast spa, and six bars and restaurants.

The work of Studio 3LHD from Zagreb, the Lone showcases contemporary Croatian design. Based on the concept of a cruise ship, the elegant white façade is dominated by six floors with gently curving balconies, reminiscent of boat decks. The interiors are light and airy, with armchairs and lampshades designed especially for the hotel by Numen Group, and installations by conceptual artists Silvio Vujičić and Ivana Franke.
