Azenhas do Mar, Sintra is a postcard-perfect small village by the sea. With its picturesque houses balancing on the cliff, over the ocean, Azenhas do Mar is one of the most enchanting places I know. Its name probably dates back to the period of Arab occupation, when they implemented some waters mills that in Portuguese are named Azenhas.
The village is nestled between the mountains and the sea, which gives it a privileged position. Yet, it isn’t its heavenly location that makes it unique. The rarity of Azenhas do Mar, Sintra comes from the white houses and the incredible beach with the amazing set of pools dug into the cliff during the 50’s.
